I recommend reading an interesting article by Mike Chaet on FitCommerce.com on the advantages and limitations of standardizing group exercise classes and branding formats here: http://tinyurl.com/65a4nw

As far as this being a system that accommodates for instructors newly entering the field, well I'm all for that! The fact remains, we are NOT seeing many new instructors entering the field. And if a turn-key program can minimize the barriers of entry, so be it. Granted, at some point the qualifications (or perhaps the definition) of a group ex instructor might need to be revisited. But right now, we simply need more professionals motivating more people to move!

Mmm, I've never really thought about that before. I've seen nutritional supplements or dietary designs coupled with fitness in strategic marketing campaigns or in conjunction with a health club or personal training departments. But as far as group exercise is concerned, I'm not too sure fitness instructors would completely embrace that idea.

What are the advantages to "branded" classes? If we take this approach, you will see that its success lies in the approach these companies take in training their instructors. Today, besides the traveling fitness circuses, there are few reliable avenues of affordable training and support for a working instructor. These companies have created a system that works for those new instructors entering the field, looking for a more organized support system in the development of their career.

Interesting series... and great look at the "branded" trajectory. What do you think about co-branding-- for instance, 2 brands create a co-branded fitness and supplements program or fitness and nutrition, etc?
